Octopath Traveller's breakboost system is honestly so ingenious in its simplicity. Without it, the combat system would be a pretty bog-standard turnbased system, fine to play but nothing that'd stand out. With the breakboost system, every single battle turns into a mini puzzle as I try to allocate my characters to take as few hits as I possibly can. I'm having more fun with it than the majority of all turnbased games just with the addition of these two very simple mechanics.

This makes me wanna play Octopath even more... that sounds a lot like what made Shadow Hearts II interesting. It was also turn-based, and it spiced up the system by having not only the judgment ring but also having enemy placement and the right arts to make things pretty efficient in some battles (if enemies lined up just right/your AOE was good). But you still had to get the ring right or plans would fail haha. I like when turn-based games do something that helps make them more...interesting, without making it full-on tactical (which I'm not good at). It spoiled me so much fifteen years ago that I tend to be more critical of turn-based now, sadly. :(
